Mike, from Idaho, has an "ahhh" moment in understanding the
importance of timing our requests to the horse's feet. In
Brent's clinics he helps his students understand how to feel
where each foot is, and when it is most easily directed. Brent
also offers exercises to help "get the reins connected to the
feet". This is a critical concept for any student of
horsemanship.
Brent uses different simulations to help his students learn
more about "feel." Here, Brent helps a student understand how
much feel can be transmitted through a loose rein. (Notice a
herd of Elk in the background!!)
Learn to use your "energy" instead of your muscles to improve
the clarity of your requests and the timing of your releases.
Brent helps Megan understand how her positioning will help her
pony find the correct bend on a circle.
Direct your horse's mind... Brent sends a subtle feel down the
line to ask his horse to look to his right.Look closely at the last photo in this series. This horse's left ear is telling you he's about to look back at Brent. The ear and the eye are connected. Where the ear goes, the eye goes.. and the mind will follow.
Giving yourself and your horse a common focus allows the two
of you a great opportunity to blend together and work as a
team.
At a cow clinic, students will learn teamwork. Here the class
trailer loads the herd of cows from the middle of the arena.
Day 1: In the "Young Horse Handling" course, we use
yearlings that have had very little, if any, handling by
humans. They are, for all intents and purposes, wild
animals... to start with.
Day 6: Dorota came from Poland to participate in the
"Young Horse" classes. Here she relaxes with the yearlings on
the last day of class. These horses have been handled by
humans for only 6 days of their life - They've come a loooong
way!
Brent is always working to further his knowledge of
horses. In this photo Brent and Will Croncich (from the Academy of Equine Dentistry, in Idaho) discuss how poor dental work can affect the horse's ability to flex at the poll.
